Vision Insurance?

I need vision insurance. I am not covered under my parents vision insurance because the company dropped the insurance. I wear contacts and I get a supply for 3 months but still they are expensive because they are a special perscription. Are there any compannies that just offer vision insurance by itself? I don’t need the whole package just vision insurance. I am down to my last pair of contacts which will last me for a while. I am almost able to afford the contacts for this time but I am being laid off my job so I think I better get insurance while I still can. Please Help me.

There ARE vision plans — most stink. You can look online, etc. Most are discount plans.

The alternative (which is often available) is to see whether or not the optical store you go to has any such internal plan. They often provide this service, not just to save you money, but to guarantee that you continue going to them (instead of to a competitor).

The problem with vision insurance is exactly what you are talking about. EVERYONE who just wants vision insurance already needs glasses, contacts, or some such thing. It is guaranteed to cost the insurer a certain amount of money, so the premiums need to reflect, not only the guaranteed cost of the contacts, but eye surgery, etc.

Health insurance absorbs these costs within the overall premium (which must account for the fact that some might contract cancer, but most will need virtually no health care all year).

This is why vision plans are almost all “discount” plans.

Let your fingers do the walking, on the internet. You will find some plans, but do not expect to save as much as you might hope.

Green Thumb answers:

AmeriPlan USA used to have a pretty good deal. I used to broker for them when I was a stay-at-home Mom. It’s a flat rate draft every month that guarantees you a discount on services. The vision care service providers agree to let you use the card along with your insurance so you’ll always get the best deal. They’ve also got a dental plan that’s a great add-on too.

The card also gets you a ton of other benefits as well.

Vision insurance really isn’t insurance anymore. It just gets you discounts or flat rates on things so this is another option. Their website can hook you up with an independant broker in your area so you can have someone local to ask questions before you decide to sign up.

Just a heads up. This IS an MLM so your broker will most likely ask if you’d like to sign up as a broker too. You are NOT required to do so to get the discount on services, so you can make your life simple by being clear up right up front that it will never be an option for you and not to ask again. They’ll probably appreciate it and won’t bother you about it again since they hate to waste a sales pitch!

As for dental….you are already behind the curve. They want to start seeing babies at 12 months or with their first tooth. I just brought my daughter in to the dentist for the first time as an emergency when I noticed her tooth turning black (which I thought was from a falling injury but was really stained from iron supplements). If she would have needed a root canal plus other stuff it would have been thousands and I was thanking God she was on my dental insurance!! I wouldn’t wait….

It’s hard to get health insurance if you have an existing problem. Is it also hard to get vision insurance like this?

I have never had vision insurance, but hope to get it soon. I am nearsighted in one eye and have astigmatism in the other, which are pretty common problems; but, even common problems make normal insurance difficult!

Green Thumb answers:

No.

Vision insurance just spreads the cost of an annual eye exam and glasses/contacts out over the course of a years premiums. Thats it. It doesnt matter whats wrong with your eyes. They wont even ask you whats wrong with your eyes when you apply. It doesnt matter.

So the answer is no…you cannot be “denied” a vision plan for a pre-existing vision problem. Not that i’ve ever heard of anyway

    – The band where the outgoing infrared is allowed, is weakly affected by water vapor
– The smaller chart at the side shows 40 watts directly radiated back to space, 195 watts of thermal radiation – this would be due to conduction and convection transferring heat to upper atmosphere.

Now , nobody seriously suggests that increasing CO2 will directly increase the greenhouse effect. The hypothesis is that increased CO2 will cause increased water vapor and that will increase the effect. But :
– Gases rise as they warm (convection). Water vapor is 18/28ths (by mole wt.) of the other gases, so it rises well – until it reaches an altitude cool enough to condense it (which releases heat)
-Water vapor content varies (humidity). areas with low hunidity are that way for reasons. The bitter cold of the upper atmosphere or the arctic. The heat of the deserts ( causes increased convection of H2O)
– Although water vapor only reaches to 25000 feet (the highest clouds) , 2/3rd of the atmosphere is below 25000 feet – barometric pressure decreases rapidly. So is 2/3rds of whatever greenhouse effect
is due to other gases.
– increased water vapor means an increase in the evaporation/ convection/ condensation cycle – a very effective negative feedback. If it’s cold out, the wator vapor ends up being snow over wider areas- ( has anyone noticed? )increased albedo is another negative feedback. And increased albedo from more cloud cover.

Nobody seriously questions that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, or that there’s a greenhouse effect. Nor that global warming has been occuring since the little ice age ended ~1860. Statements that “scientists don’t question greenhouse effect or global warming” are misleading.

     The questions :
– Is all that beyond the understanding of voters?
– shouldn’t the media and schools be talking about the facts of the matter, rather than scary speculations about inundated cities & such?
– Since the energy policies needed to fight AGW would make 4$ gasoline look like a warning shot, shouldn’t there be serious debate, including educating the public?
– If 4$ gas was a warning shot, wouldn’t cap & trade be like having the green gang ( or gang green, if you prefer) shoot us in the foot, after the warning shot?
– Since gas prices began receding immediately after pres. Bush forced discussion of the idea of talking about increased oil drilling in the USA, shouldn’t we send him a thank you note, every time we buy gas for 1.50?
Great answers
– The reason the upper atmosphere is bitter cold, even during the daytime,is because IR is freely radiated into space.
Like a night in the desert, without water vapor “blocking” the IR, the greenhouse effect is unimpressive. A near vacuum is nearly transparent to IR, right? Even if the upper atmosphere was entirely co2, wide swaths of the spectrum would be unrestricted.
The small graphic at the right shows about 1/6th of IR is directly radiated to space from the surface. I’d point out that at the surface a molecules re-emission would have a 50% chance of hitting the dirt, in the upper atmoshere it’d have a 50% chance of going into space, never to return. Being that the re-emmision is in the wavelengths the gases are most opaque at, the 50% going down would have a difficult path back to the surface, tending to be reabsorbed and return by convection.
greenhouse is a bad analogy. Better : layers of mesh, decreasing resistance to outflow. allows convection.

Green Thumb answers:

I have been trying to get to the bottom of the greenhouse effect aswell recently, some call it simple physics but even an article on Realclimate.org stated it was complex to explain with simple physics or even climate models, hence it is simulated with simplified equations designed to represent climate but not based literally physics (due to the complexity that would be required in the model) and complex radiative convection is ignored etc…many explantions are contradictory of each other and are often simplifications that do not really explain the physics behind it (and the physics are very complex and poorly understood i.e. Hypothesised).

Hienz Hug is not the only person to try such practical experiments and tests done with glass also show the same results, i.e. A material that absorbs infrared doesnt warm the air beneath and in some instances causes very slight cooling. Practical tests in science take priority over models on the evidence scale, hence the tests are the most reliable indication of what increased co2 will do, though it doesnt make it correct.

The climate modellers explain it as this: there are “layers” in which infrared is abosrbed, what isnt absorbed in the first one that is already a max absorbtion moves up until it can find a layer that isnt at its max, by adding co2 there will be more co2 higher up to absorb infrared.

Re-emission by definition is caused by a gas that gains no heat.
Instead the level at which energy is readiated to space rises and due to it being cooler, its less efficient at loosing the heat, and hence warming occurs. The mechanism that no one seems to explain well is how this extra warmth (which hasnt been observed) makes it then back to the surface against the energy flow to warm surface air below, and what radiative convection would occur due to warmer air and cooler air meeting.

Gerlich 2007 also discusses some of the problems with the greenhouse theory, for example it is in breach of the second law of thermodynamics. See his paper in sources below.

Jelbring, 2003 also demonstrates that the greenhouse effect can be explained in a completely different manner to climate models within the bounds of physics. “Here, using a different approach, it is shown that GE can be explained as mainly being a consequence of known physical laws describing the behaviour of ideal gases in a gravity field” The comment from his paper above suggests the current explanation is not currently explained entirely within known physical laws.

Finally, I read an article recently where something like 50 MIT physicists were given the task of working out what reduction in co2 would be needed to curb disaster, all of them came up with differing answers and none were apparently correct, demonstrating how it is difficult to understand or explain within the laws of physics. This just demonstrates how complex the explanation really is. The there is the issue water vapour or co2 isnt well mixed at the surface (where most absorbtion occurs) as its missing or outgassed from the sea at the equator and re-absorbed at the poles etc…

Greenhouse effect aside, the other issue of course that the co2 lifetime is only around 7.5 years (based on the average of 31 peer reviewed papers) based on c12/c13 isoptope analysis at Mauna Loa, which proves that nearly all the rise in co2 has been predominantly natural due to outgassing from the sea as it warmed (this is backed up by the earths climate history), and why this may add some warming, it is a natural effect and cutting emissions will make no difference unless (I wont go into what has warmed the sea, it certaintly isnt air temps as its drives them).

The IPCC of course use an un-validated model to show all the increase was man made, and are left with a mysterious co2 sink that absorbs 50% of co2 that no one can find (i.e the model fails validation). That makes much more sense than using actual observations!

Greenhouse Gases Questions?

Green Thumb answers:

Actually, the sun is FAR too far away from us to give us any heat directly (contrary to the popular “Goldilocks” belief, we do not live the “perfect” distance away from the sun.)

The heat in our atmosphere is generated by greenhouse gasses, which absorb the sun’s radiation. Radiation is different from heat and can easily travel the distance from the sun to earth without getting weakened much.

So ALL of the heat on earth is generated right here at home, by greenhouse gasses and also by the surface (we all know dark surfaces absorb light, and thus turn it into heat–that’s why we wear light colored clothes in the summer).

Garden Gate puts out nice and easy garden plans. You also get a shopping list to help you when you go to the garden center. You get a watercolor picture to show the garden and there are tons of options to choose from. The plants in the designs are generally quite easy to come by and you can substitute also if you can’t find something – just stick the a similar color and height when doing so.

I hear you. There are no good, easy, and applicable websites for flower beds! They’re either all too complicated, not what I’m looking for, or the plants don’t grow in my region. Grrr.

Here’s some of the things I do:

- I walk around my neighborhood looking for nice flower beds and gardens. When i see one I like I make a few mental notes on what shape they were in, what plants were there (even if I don’t know the names – I can choose something similar or ask that neighbor), and the contrast of the colors blooming at the same time. Stuff like that.

-I don’t bother with hardiness zones and all that complicated stuff. My local garden center won’t sell that lovely shrub I saw on the internet if it won’t grow where I live anyway.

-I ask my friends and neighbors about their plants. They’re always eager to share!

Then I just plant. Some of the stuff comes along nicely. Other stuff doesn’t do well. Every year I find myself digging some of them up and moving them around, and strange as it sounds … That’s the fun part!

You can treat the whole area with an herbicide such as Roundup. It will kill all vegetation, which will then have to be removed. Or you can turn the soil over using a tractor to till or dig it. This may need to be repeated once or twice to kill all the grass and weeds, but will leave you with well-worked soil. You could also use a rototiller to accomplish the same thing, but a half-acre’s a lot to rototill. Hope this helps

Will decorative rock work as a gravel substitute under a backyard shed?

I’m planning on building a tool/garden shed in our back yard. Instead of burying posts, I’m planning on building it on skids.

Most of the plans I’ve seen for sheds resting on skids call for an inch or so of gravel under the skids. I assume this is to provide drainage so the skids won’t rot resting on wet ground.

However, we’ve got a lot of decorative quartz garden rock that the previous owner used as ground cover under a ground-level patio. We were planning on just taking that to the dump, but is there any reason not to use that instead of gravel under the skids?
Just to clarify…there’s no slab where the shed will be – there’s just dirt right now.

The previous owners had a ground-level deck in another portion of the back yard which as been removed. Under the decking they had put down plastic and the decorative rock on top of the plastic, presumably to prevent anything from growing.

The decorative rocks are roughly 1/2″ x 1″ in size – larger than gravel. But I’m wondering if these rocks are small enough still to serve the same function and if there’s any other reason I’m not aware of that gravel would be a better alternative.

Green Thumb answers:

Yes your right the shale or gravel, is to help with drainage, this in turn help slowdown the process of rot. But if you use treated timber for your skids then you should not need gravel. If I understand you here you have a slabbed patio area as long as this is level so your shed does not twist once erected you will be fine.

Tantalized timer these days is well protected from water penetration and so it can withstand being out in wet conditions. A shed company I used a few years ago recommend a flat slab for a shed.

If you don’t have a slabbed base then yes you can use a gravel base.

Any ideas for a birthday present for my grandfather?

Green Thumb answers:

From reading your question, your grandfather wouldn’t want anything for his birthday. He’d want to hang out with you. Get him something small and use that $300 bucks to make more time to be with him. Take a day off work to just hang out with him here and there. At 70, he’ll love to have a lot of your time. And you’ll always treasure the memories.

I loved my grandparents and they’re all gone now. I spent a lot of time with them but I wish I’d spent more time with them than I did. It ain’t about a gift, it’s about spending time together.

Just get him something simple. It’s the thought that counts. Get some really fine chocolate or some treat most folks wouldn’t buy for themselves. Something he can enjoy with you and your mom.

Like I said, use the money to leverage a day off here and there to take your grandpa somewhere.

We put a new flower bed in our front yard two years ago (we had a 40′ willow tree in the
center of our yard we lost to a lightning strike) so we decided to put in a flower bed to replace
it. We simply marked off the shape we wanted and sprayed the whole thing with Round Up.
It took about two weeks for the grass (centipede grass which is hard to get rid of) to die. Then
simply raked out as much of the dead grass as we could and covered the area with top soil
then landscape fabric. Then planted our plants and shrubs and a coral bark Japanese maple
and mulched. The bed is thriving. Every thing is growing well and no grass has returned.
Round Up only kills what it touches, so once you have applied it, it will not affect future
plantings. We planted the bed within two weeks of application and lost no plants. We
have built two other beds since then in the same manner with no problems. Just remember to
apply Round Up when it is not windy ( it will kill off anything it touches ) so you don’t want it
blowing in the wind.

Is it legal for people not to take care of their land- field btw- if it affects neighbours land ?!!?!?

Our land was sold to us to build a house on, and the people still own a large field behind this.We are wondering whether they are under any legal obligation to look after their land as it is green field and SSSI.

Large varieties of wildlife live there such as muntjack deer and pheasants, along with other birds too. Around a decade ago the field had trees with ploughed land that was well cared for, however it has now deteriorated and has several young trees growing and taking up the land. These block out our light in the evenings and are ruining our view. There are several nettle and bramble patches which continually grow into our garden and we have spotted non-members of the family wandering around the field before which obviously poses a security risk for us. There is also waste materials such as old garden tools and rubbish that has been flytipped because they so rarely look after their land.

On occasion we have been forced to take action, as cutting down some of the young trees and therefore trespassing on their property as it affects our land. There are large trees which are not trimmed and we hear creaking noises in high wind which is a sign there could be deadfalls in the night, which would damage our house.

The value of our house has gone down because of the field but they have continually refused to sell it to us, despite us offering to pay approximately £2000 above the market price as they are convinced that despite the TWO things that would make them unable to ever build on the land (green field and SSSI status) that they will gain planning permission.

Is there any way we can force them to take care of their land, since it is affecting us by blocking out our light, causing unwanted weeds to grow in our garden, allowing vermin such as rats to get into our garden since they can live happily in the field, trespassers being able to get into our garden etc. or can we use any legalities to get them to let us buy the field?

How would you interpret this dream?

Ok so this dream really freaked me out and made me quite upset.

I’m not sure what town I was in but I was driving down a road surrounded by forests. I arrived at my destination, a white modern looking building. I think it was supposed to be a University but I’ve never seen one like it before. There were huge groups of people surround the two main entrances.

They weren’t trying to get in, they were trying to keep the people that were in from escaping. Apparently there was some sort of virus, I’m not too sure. But I snuck into the building and rescued three people who weren’t infected. I got them two my car which was pretty far away in the parking lot.

When I got there I realized I had lost my boots (VERY WEIRD) so I went back to look for them and one of the people I rescued came with me (turns out it was my brother)
So we go back, and somehow my shoes just appear on my feet and I was confused but went back to the car anyway. When I got back to the car the other two were in the backseat about to eat candy and I slapped it out of their hands because apparently thats what was making people insane. I didn’t realize at the time but my brother ate a doughnut but seemed fine. I drove back to my house and we were all inside.

I saw this man outside and he had a wolverine and he was trying to sick it on my neighbors dog but the dog ran into my neighbors yard. So then he wanted to sick it on my dog. Which is something I couldn’t allow. And when I turned around my brother was crazy and he had a garbage with and anchor in it and he was planning on dropping it on my dog.

I was VERY emotional by this point. I didn’t have a choice but to get a weapon to stop my brother so I took this weird knife from a draw– it was very knife like it was more like a gardening tool. I scratched him in the chest like 15 times and his face just turned to horror. he dropped the anchor and just stood there. I ran outside and did the same thing to the wolverine guy and he dropped to the ground.

I ran back inside and just looked into my brothers face. I was hysterically crying by this point and asked him if he wanted me to not make it hurt anymore, and he said no (he wanted to suffer). I was crying so so much and felt so sick. I did what I did because it was the only way to stop him. And then I woke up.

What is your interpretation of this dream?? It was really upsetting for me.
Also I’m very close to my brother, so this was very emotional for me.

Green Thumb answers:

An anchor may be seen as something that is holding you back or restraining your freedom.

If you look up what a dog means in a dream it says this:

To see a dog in your dream, symbolizes intuition, loyalty, generosity, protection, and fidelity. The dream suggests that your strong values and good intentions will enable you to go forward in the world and bring you success. The dream dog may also represent someone in your life who exhibits these qualities. Alternatively, to see a dog in your dream, indicates a skill that you may have ignored or forgotten. If the dog is vicious and/or growling, then it indicates some inner conflict within yourself. It may also indicate betrayal and untrustworthiness. If the dog is dead or dying, then it means a loss of a good friend or a deterioration of your instincts. Also consider common notions associated with the word dog, such as loyalty (“man’s best friend”) and to be “treated like a dog”.

Is your brother, or someone you feel is like a brother to you restraining your “loyalty” or any other ‘dog like’ quality? Sounds weird haha XD

Should I return an expensive, unwanted Christmas gift?

I’ve never had a real wedding band so my husband decided that a new one would make a good Christmas gift – I agreed! Instead of just a plain gold band like I requested, he gave me a more ornate one. It looked great in the box, but when I put it on my finger, I knew immediately that he had mistakenly purchased a man’s wedding band. It’s thick and bulky and heavy and looks awful on my hand. I checked the jewelry store’s website and sure enough, it’s a man’s ring. Hubby said he was told by the sales clerk it was a “unisex” ring. He was duped — to the tune of $300. He wants me to keep the ring (he’s a very proud man) because I don’t think he wants to admit he made a big mistake. If he wants to pay the $300 which will enable him to keep his pride, that’s fine. But what about me? Am I now supposed to wear this very masculine ring forever and pretend I like it? Should I return the ring? I don’t want to hurt my husband! What should I do? THANKS!!

Is This a Smart Idea (best answer awarded)?

Okay. My immediate family is not very large (mum, dad, 2 brothers). I usually save up money for Christmas starting in November. From the first of November to however long in December, my entire paycheck goes towards Christmas ($125 a week).

My thing is, with the economy falling down the drain, I know it’s not wise to spend so much money. I usually have around $500-600 total to spend. Last year I spent almost all of that.

I usually get mum some form of sapphire jewelry and this year I was hoping to get her a necklace. Thing is that the necklace retails for $190 AFTER the sale price. I might be able to get the jeweler to go down another $40, but not much more than that.

For dad, I intend to get him a new gold watch (he’s had the same watch since the 80s). I’m looking at one that’s about $120.

I always get really nice clothes for my older brother (A.E attire) and that usually runs be about $150+. For my oldest brother…well I don’t really care. Last year he got a hoodie that was originally for my other brother, but I had to give him something.

And since my older brother is about to be engaged to his girlfriend, I want to get her a piece of nice jewelery, too (something with her birthstone, probably in the $100+ range).

Here’s my question: Is this a smart idea? They say that not many people will be spending so much money this year, but I always go all out.

Too bad the only things I want is a BC and a regulator for my scuba unit. I told everyone NOT to get either one for me because they cost so much ($200-$300 each). I’ll save up my own money for that.

As I asked, though. Would any of you spend this type of money nowadays? Or would you be a little more frugal with your shopping?

Do answer! I will choose a best answer at the end!

I think that because it is a plain-coloured dress you need some bright accessories to go with it. Bright red or bright blue shoes would look good, either flats or heels would look amazing.

Accessories-wise I would recommend something bright, bold and big: plastic statement jewellery in bright colours would look amazing. I would recommend the following sites:

http://www.jijikiki.co.uk/index.php

http://www.loveheartsandcrosses.bigcartel.com/

Alternately, strings of brightly-coloured beads would look amazing with it. You could alternate long strings with shorter ones which cling around the neck.

As for a bag, again, something bright would look good (I’m thinking the shiny-style materials) or you could try contrasting with a plain black bag.

1 carat diamond earrings price?

I am looking to buy a pair of 1 carat diamond earrings for my girl for x-mas, and am trying to not wait until the last minute. I have done a little bit of looking at the mall at the little jewelry stores, although I am pretty sure that they are not the place to buy from. They all had two grades of earrings, better and best. I am not very knowledgable about this at all. I know there are grades and colors of diamonds, but all I remember them saying was better and best quality. In those terms, I guess I am looking to get the best quality diamonds. I want them to be princess cut and in white gold. What is a good price to pay for earrings like this? The shops were anywhere from $2400 to $3000. Any suggestions on where to buy from? Is online shopping a horrible idea, considering I am completely uneducated in diamond shopping? I live in New Jersey just outsde of Philadelphia if that matters. Is it worth waiting until closer to x-mas for better sales? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Green Thumb answers:

Yes, the Tiffany blue box is impressive–but you are paying a premium for it plus the earrings.

My recommendation is that you go to a family jeweler who is well established in your area. Call them first and ask them if you can make an appointment–they may tell you that you don’t need to, but it is best if you are expecting to be there for awhile. Ask if they have a gemologist.

Go to a shop that has a Gemological Institute of America gemologist on premises. The gemologist will not just tell you good and better about the quality of the diamonds you will see, he/she will educate you on what you can get for the money you would like to spend.

They may already have earrings mounted or they can get loose stones in for you to choose from. Either way, you stand a better chance of getting a finer quality pair of earrings for what you can afford than going to a mall store.

I’m planning on building some raised gardens by next year, and I have a compost pile from vegetable scraps (from 3 people), and some rabbit manure we got off craigslist. when I’ll need to add more soil for the raised gardens, could I just use compost entirely, or should i mix in some local soil?
Compost should never be used on its own as a growing mediem in vegi gardens its often used around seedlings to help with starting off.
Compost should always be blended with the soil that you have.
As required i purchase two trailer loads 6×4 trailer per year to spread over garden like a mulch’
when was making garden bed for vegi patch the supplier that i picked up from insisted i take only blended mix for it which is what i did.
It can be a risk bringing in topsoils due to weeds etc always better if possible to improve your own soil with compost which you have made.
Have given you a link to a site on compost for home gardener it might be helpful. .

We’ve not read a lot of information on humic acid powders as soil amendments, they are more along the lines of fertilizers or products that enhance the uptake of soil nutrients. Gypsum is a good choice for breaking up clay soils.

A screen box is best, and the mesh is approx 3/8 to 1/2 inch for best results.

I’ll assume the rocks aren’t that small in general. They can be used after the fact as a bed covering, like a mulch, or in ares where a French Drain might be needed.

Frame with 2/4′s as large or small as you feel is adequate, horseshoe nail the selected piece of screening to the frame, set in on blocks, saw horses, milk crates, use a bucket under, a wheel barrow under, or just let it sift to the ground.

What is the best way to prepare a garden that is made of clay soil?

I just recently moved to Texas and our house has little landscaping in the front. I planned a garden, but as I started to dig, it was hard clay. After doing some reading, I went out and bought organic compost and sphagnum peat moss. I was going to break up about 6 inches of the clay and apply the compost and peat moss and mix it in. Does anyone have suggestions? I don’t mind the work, but I’m curious if I’m going about this the right way and if so, do I need to water the soil or just let it sit?
Green Thumb answers:

Sounds like you have the idea. Add lots of organics. Let the worms work.

Yes water it well, slowly and deeply. It makes it easy (possible) to work. Till it in. You could just plant into it right away.

Adding sand doesn’t really help much with anything. Just a waste of money and effort. Add more compost every year.

Best to grow a deep rooted cover crop if you have time to rotate crops. Some will grow nicely right thur the winter, like barley and winter wheat and many clovers. Try vetch and bell beans. Just about any beans.
Use innoculated legume seeds, or get the innoculant for you garden beans and peans. It adds the nitrogen fixing bacteria right to the roots. Good stuff.

Adding gypsum, or some form or Calcium, will open up the clay chemically.

Green Thumb answers:

Compost. You want to build up the tilth of the soil, and since you only have sand you need to add the other components, and one of the best ways it through compost. It helps retain moisture, provides nutrients, builds up soil composition – there are so many good things about it. Also take some soil samples (check with your local Ag Extension Agent or Master Gardener program) to find out the pH balance of the soil. This will help you when you’re selecting plants, and will also identify what you specifically need to do to the soil for vegetable plantings.

See if you can find anyone local who owns horses as composted horse manure is excellent. Any other composted manure is excellent as well. You may also want to consider investing in a barrel composter. These compost yard and kitchen (veggie only, no dairy or meat products) wastes into compost you can use in your yard/garden.

Be prepared for this to take a number of seasons. Identify the areas you want to have productive immediately and target these for the first year, and then slowly expand from there with each growing season. This way you’ll be able to enjoy it as well as afford it.

Hi:
I am a landscaper and designer. I have owned my own business. I started out with building my own greenhouse and planting over 5,000 seedlings at a time.

You do not have to have a degree in order to run your own business. You do need knowledge of plant speicmens and their germination rates, light requirements, and other factors. If you do not have a degree, research all the plant specimens you would like to grow.

You can gain experience by working at a nursery and also speciality areas that have greenhouses. There are special tips for growing plants from seeds. I will link you to the spice and herb section of my website. There is a page on growing herbs from seeds. This is true for many other plant specimens.

A lof of people that own greenhouses are wholesale growers. You can also be a retail seller. This is something you need to look into in your own area, and what would work for you. Your amount of money will depend on your own self motivation and how bad you want to help others growing plants for them. Research the different possibilities such as flowers, herbs, vegetables, shrubs or even trees. Gain your knowledge and believe that you can do it. Client satisfaction should be your number one goal! I will link you to a page that might help you with your decision on having a greenhouse and doing it for a profession. I will also link you to the site map of my website. This page has everything that is on the website. Browse through as there may be articles, tips or techniques that may help you decide. If you need further suggestions, please feel free to contact me. Good luck with your decision and best of luck to you. Have a great day!

Starting a greenhouse and have lots of questions!?

I’m just getting a greenhouse started (in Northerrn CA) andh ave tons of questions about planting ~ when, what, temps, growing through the winter, and much more! I’ve googled, but aren’t finding good info. Anyone know some good sources??
I’m wanting to grow veggies. I’ve had outdoor planter boxes for the past few years ~ this year we removed them and are building an actual greenhouse, hoping to grow veggies year round.

Green Thumb answers:

By starting a greenhouse do you mean that you are starting a nursery? What kind of nursery do you want (wholesale, retail…)? What kinds of plants are you growing (herbs, veggies, perennials, shrubs, trees…)? What size containers are you using? How will you get your plants (seeds, cuttings, plugs…)? What kind of soil mix will you use? This is just the tip of the iceberg.

There is a good, helpful book available too to help answer some of your questions.

I’m in N. CA too and your very best bet is to contact your local ag. Extension office and see what information they can provide you. You should also become chummy with some nurseries in your area. The local growers will be a wealth of information to you. As long as you are not a direct competitor, they should be willing to share helpful information with you.

Perhaps if you edit your question, I can help you further.

EDIT: Okay, so you want your own personal greenhouse. Well, just let me say that it’s not the easiest of things to get started with. There are many, many variables and tons of considerations. Here is a link with just a little information for you, although you may have already seen it: http://www.gardenguides.com/how-to/tipstechniques/vegetables/yearroundvegetables.asp#

Again, you should get in touch with the ag. Extension office as they will be able to help you the most. Getting the proper temperature and maintaining it during the night is key. You also have to be sure the greenhouse is getting enough light (not being shaded by a tree or anything). Light is going to be crucial during the winter when the temperatures are low.

It also depends on where you are in N. CA, if you get a few freezing nights then your heating system doesn’t have to be that elaborate. If you are in the foothills, it will have to be quite extensive. Will it be gas or electric? If you are starting your veggies from seeds, you need proper seed flats, planting mixes, bottom heat so that the seeds sprout quickly in the winter… Your location will also help in determining what kind of greenhouse you need. You may be able to get away with a pvc type of hoop house and heat with a propane tank with a burner on it.

Sorry if I’m giving you more questions than answers but I just want to share what I know. Good luck.
