Vinegar or citrus like lemon or orange peels around the garden will also keep them out, my brother does this so the neighborhood cats will quit using his garden as a little box.

Susan asks…
dictionary of plants that have beneficial effects on humans?
I’m looking to start up a garden this summer composed mostly of plants that in some way or another can benefit human beings (even if they have to be prepared somehow.) For example, aloe vera can be used to help treat wounds. I wonder wondering if there was a dictionary of plants that somehow effect human beings so I can start planning out what im going to plant.

Hello,
Congrats on creating a backyard bird sanctuary. Sounds like a great time. I hope the information below helps!
Gardening For Hummingbirds
How do you attract hummingbirds to your garden? Think red! Hummers are attracted to bright red flowering plants. Try planting the following:Gardens that Attract Hummingbirds
1. Bee Balm – A gorgeous flowering plant reminiscent of an exploding crimson firework. When planting Bee Balm choose a place a site with full sun to light shade and rich, well-drained soil.
2. Cigar Plant – a long tubular plant with orange-red blooms. At the end of the long tube, is a thin pistil that look like a the flower is sticking out its tongue at onlookers. It withstands heat well and will thrive in full sun to part shade.
3. Trumpet Honeysuckle – an enticing flower available in red, orange, and yellow blooms. This plant will climb well so should be positioned near a fence.
4. Cardinal Flower – was named after the Cardinal, a strikingly-colored bird that commands attention. This plant can grow up to four feet tall in partial shade to full sun.
Gardening for Other Bird Species
Make sure to plant berry-producing shrubs in your garden. Berries tend to attract a great variety of birds, including cedar waxwings, grosbeaks, robins, thrushes, bluebirds and much more. Some plants to consider: bayberries, brambles, grapes, hollies, mulberries, juneberries, and elderberries.
The next thing you will want is a water source. I think there is a wonderful selection of bird baths at YourBirdoasis.com – http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/birdbath-garden-birdbath.html. This store also has a wide variety of:
1. Decorative Bird Houses – http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/birdhouse-decorative-birdhouses.html
2. Nesting Boxes and nesting materials- http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/birdhouse-nesting-boxes.html
3. Feeders – http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/feeders-for-birds-decorative-bird-feeders.html
4. Black Oil Sunflower Seed (best seed to use in your feeders for the widest variety of bird species) – http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/cmcbos25.html
Best of luck and happy birding!!!

Lizzie asks…
Advice needed, can you help plan my garden please?
My front garden gets no sun whatsoever, It is in the shadow of my house until about 5p.m. Weeds grow just fine but little else. I have two small plots either side of my centre path. They measure approx. 15 feet wide and 8 feet long (the path is short and leads straight to a public footpath). What sort of plants could I put in such small plots and which would survive with so little sun and warmth? I don’t have a huge budget for plants and would prefer things that are fairly low maintenance as I have spinal problems. I’m in U.K. where we get lots of rain and very erratic weather patterns.

Hosta’s…ferns…..moss…..ivy……these are all great shade garden plants. They also look very nice planted in groupings…..ei….in your space you could do 3 ferns down the centre, then do a ground cover of moss. The moss may also choke out the weeds….depending on your type of weed you have.
Scotch moss will flower a little white flower, it’s quite pretty.
Good luck

Chris asks…
What can I use to fertilize my garden?
Its not very big. Only about 5ft x 4 ft space. I only plan to plant tomato’s. Should I buy a bag of maneur and dump on it or what?

Green Thumb answers:
Happy a bag of manure would be the best, that’s been used for thousands of years and works wonders. It’s still used today with excellent results. We used it on tomato’s and cabbage and potato’s and other veges in Southeastern Missouri every year, it works. You can add it to the soil then mix it in. Make your rows that you will plant in and after the plants are a month or few weeks old sprinkle a little manure around the plants and water them well. I hope that helps some. You can ask you fertilizer store for help too. Take care hope you luck! Jimmy.

William asks…
How can I keep earthworms from coming into my home?
I know they are good for the environment and I am all for having them in my yard because I plan on planting a garden. But it’s disgusting to step on one in the middle of the night in the dark in my bare feet and my cat feels a need to play with them. I also don’t want to expose my cat to toxic pesticides.

Green Thumb answers:
The only way you culd get the earthworms out of your yard is to use pesticide and there is some pesticide they are safe for animals you just only have to go to home depo and ask them for a pesticide the is safe 4 animals and if thy tell you they dont have one then use any other brand but you will have to get your cat 4 about 5days in a safer plase and then afther that you will not have any problem any more 4 a wile.
Note: the pesticides they are safe for animals are not as strong ass the other ones…..
