Answers To Your Questions About Herb Garden Design

Chris asks…

How to design an Herb Garden?

What is the best way to design a herb garden?

Green Thumb answers:

Plan your garden before planting it. Consider the herbs you want to plant and what you’ll use them for. Herbs grow in various ways; some herbs, such as thyme, are low growing and spreading while others, such as parsley, grow in clumps. Mint is a taller, vigorously growing herb which often needs to be contained. Herbs are considered either annuals or perennials and many will bloom just like more traditional flowers.

List or draw your garden on paper first. If you know the size of your garden you’ll easily be able to choose the appropriate plants. Likewise, if you have certain herbs in mind you’ll able to plan the right size garden.

Lizzie asks…

Does anyone have links to well designed garden ideas?

I’m looking for links to good photographs, or even video links. I’m NOT interested in flower, or the extremely fancy herb gardens.

I’m interested in really practicle gardens that produce fruits, vegtables, berries, and possibly small orchards.

Living and working on my own farm leaves me little to no time to tour the gardens of other people. I’m always looking for good ideas I can incorperate into my own gardens and orchard.

So links with pictures, good drawings, or videos would be very much appreciated!

Green Thumb answers:

Just go to the site listed below, they have really great set ups…

I also like the idea of orchards kind of surrounding the garden, it sounds great to me….

My mom just made a bunch of raised beds, and we are going to have a sort of ‘island’ of berries in on, then in the ones around it will mostly be used for vegtables (we go through more veggies then berries, but whatever is the perfect ratio for you if great!)

Robert asks…

how much should I charge for a small herb garden?

I planted a rock-lined herb garden for my mother recently, and her co-workers and friends have shown interest in one of their own. I estimate about 250-300$ if I want to make any money, but I feel like I should be charging more, even though I already feel like people will not want to pay that much for one.

The specifics:
20 ft diameter, rock-bordered, one large bag of high-grade potting soil mixed with the topsoil, 4 hours of labor, 1 hour of purchasing plants, 1 hour collecting local stones for border, 1 hour painting rocks as labels for each herb, and a total of 30 plants (9 different herbs).

I don’t have my own tools, so I’d have to use theirs, and I also designed the layout. I would definitely discount if I had to use the customers’ tools and if they also designed the layout of the garden. The price would obviously reflect the size of the garden, but the 20 ft diameter price would be a good starting place.

Thanks for your input!

Green Thumb answers:

Why don’t you look in the phonebook and call a landscaper and ask them how much they would charge to build one for you? Then just say, “OK, I’ll think about it; thanks.” This will give you an idea of the going price. I bet they will charge a lot more than $250-300. However, I would charge less than they do because it will give you the business edge. Maybe even more people will want this then. You could make a lot of money! Sweet!

Help with grade 10 math problem?

Please do not give me the answer, just explain to me how to solve the problem.

5. A landscape gardener has designed a circular herb garden with 4 sectors, shown on the left. The radius of one sector is 4’3″. Each sector will be surrounded with plastic lawn edging that costs $9.99 for a 20′ roll. Assume that you cannot buy partial rolls.

So far I’ve converted the inches to feet, it’s 4.25′.

But now I don’t know what to do next. Help?

Green Thumb answers:

The dividers use a total of 4×4.25 = 17 ft of edging.
The perimeter uses 2?×4.25 ? 26.69 ft of edging.
Total edging ? 43.69 ft
You need 3 rolls.

Susan asks…

How can I grow herbs in my home w/o any electrical gadgets?

I buy tons of herbs each week from the grocery store and its getting kinda expensive. Basil in particular costs a bit and its always half dead and spotted to begin with. I can never find nice basil!

So to save me anywhere from 5-10 bucks a week Id like to have an indoor herb garden. I looked into those herb grower gadgets but it seems they ALL have design flaws in the pump which cause them to be noisy. SO Id rather not buy one.

Where I live its a warm/hot summer and a cold frigid winter. I just bought a baby basil plant yesterday and planted it in a small pot (smells heavenly). If I care for it and keep it warm and in sunlight will in continue to grow inside??

What about parsley/rosemary/cilantro/oregano/thyme?? They are the ones I use the most. If I plant them all in small separate ‘counter sized’ pots and care for them is it possible they will grow without the fancy machines??

Thank you!

Green Thumb answers:

Yes, it will continue to grow inside. My mother always used to have an indoor herb garden/planter. It worked fine and we still do it today, except we built a greenhouse. I would recommend getting a medium/large planter and doing it that way.

Ruth asks…

What are some good sites for ergonomics and anthropometrics in product design? (doing GCSE graphics)?

Hi I’m doing GCSE graphics and my brief is “I am to design a graphic product that will encourage families to grow their own garden. It will be aimed at families who do not spend a lot of time outdoors and would like to try out a new creative hobby together. It will contain a range of seed packaging with other accessories to help make it easy and simple to plant and grow vegetables/plants/herbs/flowers as well as instructions on how to use the product.”

I need to research relevant ergonomics and anthropometrics I will need to design my product. Do you know any good sites where I can find some good data/info?

Thank youu

William asks…

What would be the best location to plant veggies and herbs?

Okay at school we have a small plot in the back for a butterfly garden that we are going to create tomorrow. My teacher bought veggies, herbs and only flowers that are suppose to attract butterflies. So tomorrow we are going to design it and apparently plant it. I thought we were going to take more time to actually plan the layout of the garden but looks like we are just going to dig in. So I want quickly gather some information on what would possible be the most beneficial layout (I don’t know if herbs would be better next to the veggies or the veggies next to the flowers whatnot). So hopefully this small research will be helpful tomorrow when a bunch of kids show up ready to get their hands dirty (all I can think of is chaos ::shivers::). SO absolutely any help would be fantastic!

Green Thumb answers:

I’ll do #1 and #8.

1.Novels.

The number of horror novels is 46% of the number of science fiction novels; the number of science fiction novels is 65% of the number of romance novels; and the number of mystery novels is 17% of the number of horror novels. How many science fiction novels does the professor have? Round to the nearest ones.

Let h be number of horror novels, s for sci-fi novels, r for romance novels and m for mystery novels.
H = 0.46s
s = 0.65r
m = 0.17h

400 = h + s + r + m
= h + (h / 0.46) + [h / (0.46*0.65)] + 0.17h
= h * [1 + 100/46 + 10000/(46*65) + 0.17]
= h * [1.17 + (6500+10000)/(46*65)]
= h * [1.17 + 16500/2990]
= h * [117/100 + 1650/299]
= h * [199983/29900]

s = (100/46) * (29900/199983) * 400
=~ 130 books

X + y = 16
0.95x + 1.43y = 16 * 1.10 = 17.60

0.95 * (x + y = 16)
0.95x + 0.95y = 15.20
0 + (1.43 – 0.95)y = 17.60 – 15.20
0.48y = 2.40
y = 5
x = 16 – 5 = 11
