Green Thumb answers:
Wow. That must have taken you a long time to type in. I’m betting that you really know how to do some of these (and may have already completed them while you were waiting), but just took the easier route by putting them all online. I wish I knew which ones, so I wouldn’t put my time into them. Maybe post fewer next time? Anyway, here goes…
1. In numbers and symbols, letting x stand for the number, this is: 2(16+x) = x+36.5
Solving for x: 32+2x=x+36.5 —> x=4.5
2. Let x stand for the number: (x/4)+7 = 31
Solving for x: x/4=24 —> x=96
3. We know the lesser number is 4. Let x be the other number: 3(x-4)-1=8.3
Solving for x: 3x-12-1=8.3 —> 3x=21.3 —> x=7.1
4. Let x be the number. X+21=(x/2)+18.5
Solving for x: x+2.5=x/2 —> 2x+5=x —> x = -5
5. L=4W. P=2(L+W)=2(4W+W)=2(5W)=10W=35. W=3.5 meters
6. P=2(L+W)=2(8.5+W)=5W —> 17+2W=5W —> 17=3W —> W=17/3 cm
7. R=(4/3)S; (R-8)=2(S-8).
Substituting for R: (4/3)S-8 = 2S-16 —> 4S-24=6S-48 —> 24=2S —> S=12, so R=16.
8. A=2J; A-5=3(J-5)
Substituting for A: 2J-5=3J-15 —> 10=J —> Jenny is 10 years old
9. Let P=original price. P-.2(P)=132 —> .8P=132 —> P=$165
10. Each sweater cost 24.50. Let the reduced one’s original price be P: P-.5P=24.5
Solve for P: .5P=24.5 —> P=$49
11. Assuming that they mean she travels a total of 60 miles each day, rather than 60 miles each way, we have:
Going to work: 30 miles at 30mph takes one hour.
Coming back home: 30 miles at 50 miles per hour takes 30/50 hour or 36 minutes.
She travels a total of one hour, 36 minutes per day.
12. He runs 8+1+1+1+1+1+1=14 miles a week.
14 miles / 8 mph = 7/4 hour = 1 hour and 45 minutes
13. There is no such thing as a rectangular pentagon.
If you mean a “regular” pentagon, that means each side is the same length.
$450 for 5 sides means each side costs $90. $10/foot means each side is 9 feet long.
14. 16 berry bushes planted 2 feet apart means a perimeter of 16×2=32 feet.
The garden is square, so each side is 8 feet long.
15. If the width is 7ft, the length is twice that, or 14ft. P=2(L+W)=2(14+7)=42 feet.
42 feet x $95/foot = $3,990. Expensive hedge. Was it maybe $9.50/foot?
Hope you knew how to do most of these.
